A three-day, twenty-four-hour Level 1 avalanche course built for skiers, riders, climbers, and anyone pushing deeper into Alaska’s winter backcountry. This training blends classroom work with daily field sessions, giving you a full framework for recognizing and evaluating avalanche hazards. By the end of the course, you’ll know how to build a trip plan, gather the right information, identify the avalanche problem, read its patterns, choose terrain that matches the conditions, move through that terrain safely, and act decisively when something goes wrong.
Prerequisite: Expect to be outside every day. You need to be comfortable traveling uphill and downhill in variable terrain and changing snow. Splitboards, snowshoes, skins, and solid touring proficiency are required. Minimum age is 16.
Instruction and course materials are included. Transportation, food, and personal gear are not. Full gear requirements are listed in the PDF below.
